Ice Dam Removal & Prevention
Icicles down to the porch railing and a brown ring growing on the ceiling upstairs. We steam the ice off without tearing up your shingles, then help you keep it from forming again.
What Is an Ice Dam, and Why Should You Worry?
An ice dam actually begins indoors. Heat from your living space slips up into the attic and warms the roof just enough to melt the snow on top. That water trickles down until it hits the eaves, the part of the roof that hangs out past the wall, where there's no warmth underneath. It freezes there, and a little more freezes every night until there's a solid ridge of ice. That ridge is the dam.
After that, melting snow has nowhere to go. It collects behind the ice, and shingles are built to shed water running downhill, not to hold back standing water. It works its way up under the shingles and into the house: soggy insulation, stained ceilings, blistered paint and, given time, mold. For a lot of people the first sign is a drip in the hallway.
Southern Maine practically builds ice dams to order. A nor'easter drops a foot of heavy snow, a sunny afternoon melts the top of it, and the night falls back into single digits. Classic Maine capes with finished upstairs rooms, connected farmhouses and older colonials with thin attic insulation get hit the hardest.

Ice Dam Removal
We take the ice down with low-pressure steam, which melts through a dam without chipping, prying or pressure-blasting your shingles. If water is already dripping inside, call us and tell us so.
Prevention
Removal takes care of this week. Prevention takes care of next winter: sealing the attic air leaks, adding insulation and ventilation, and running heat cable where the shape of the roof makes ice hard to avoid.
Damage Assessment
With the ice off, we check the shingles, the roof deck and the attic insulation for water damage, and photograph everything so you have a record if you file a claim.
How to Tell You Have an Ice Dam
Ice Dam FAQ
What does ice dam removal cost?
That depends on how thick the ice is, how much roof edge is involved and how easy the roof is to get to, so we won't guess at a number over the phone. We'll take a look and give you the price before any work starts. Just remember that removal only deals with this winter. Fixing the attic is what keeps you from paying for it again next February.
Does homeowner's insurance cover ice dam damage?
Plenty of homeowner's policies pay for sudden water damage inside the house from an ice dam, even when they won't pay to remove the ice itself. Every policy reads differently, so check yours or ask your agent. We'll photograph and write up whatever damage we find, and we're glad to meet your adjuster at the house.
Can I just chip the ice off myself?
We'd really rather you didn't. Hammers and ice chisels crack frozen shingles and rip flashing, and a ladder on an icy driveway is a quick way to the emergency room. Rock salt stains roofing and eats through gutters. What you can safely do is use a roof rake from the ground to pull fresh snow off the lowest few feet of the roof. Leave the ice itself to steam.
How do I stop ice dams for good?
Keep the roof cold. Ice dams begin when heat from the living space escapes into the attic and warms the roof deck. Sealing those leaks, adding insulation and giving the attic proper airflow so the roof stays close to the outdoor temperature is the fix that lasts. Heat cables along the eaves can help on tricky spots, like a low dormer or a valley over a porch, that are hard to solve any other way.
Water Coming In? Call Us Now.
Every day the ice stays up, more water can get into your ceilings and walls. If nothing is dripping yet, book an assessment and we'll check the roof and the attic in the same visit.
